  4. The Durham VOICE is a community newspaper based in eastern part of Durham, North Carolina, an area of town nicknamed "the bullseye" because of its high crime and poverty rates. The paper acts as more than just a news source for these neighborhoods. Instead, it provides an avenue of empowerment for the young teen writers seen in Writing My Own Happy Ending. When this group of young, mostly black writers takes a trip to Ocracoke Island - a few hours drive but a world away from East Durham - they meet with the older, white staff of the local newspaper. A cultural exchange occurs, as these two wildly different groups of writers interact, and the teens face the challenge of learning about the island by writing up features about the it's residents. But, what begins as a fish-out-of-water story slowly reveals itself to be much more than that. By witnessing another community, the students begin to realize how much knowledge and power they already had back home. By using their own platform, they are able to uplift their community and offer a different kind of media. And while they learn so much from adults, the moral of the tale ends up being a realization that what they have to offer is as valuable as what others have to offer them
